Long-term Volunteers

We have several different long-term volunteer opportunities available.

Crisis Line Volunteer

Responds to incoming calls and provides callers with information, referrals, supportive listening, and/or crisis intervention. Crisis line volunteers must be able to work independently, respond to calls in a calm and assertive manner, and respect the confidentiality and safety of the women and children at SafeHouse Denver.

Training: 16-Hour General training plus 8 hours of crisis line program training.
Requirements: 8 hours per month, plus once-a-month educational supervision

Children's Program Volunteer

Assists with the planning and facilitation of structured group activities with children of SafeHouse clients, either at shelter or outreach. Children's program volunteers must be able to be an accepting, friendly participant in the session, giving full attention to the children.

Training: 16-Hour General training plus 8 hours of children's program training
Requirements: For both outreach and shelter, 8 hours per month, plus once-a-month educational supervision

Shelter or Outreach Administrative Volunteer

At shelter, duties include answering the phones and door, making copies, organizing areas of the shelter and supporting staff as needed.  At outreach, the responsibilities include but are not limited to data entry and general office duties.

The 16-Hour general training is mandatory for all members of the long-term volunteer program, while the other training is mandatory only if you choose those areas to volunteer. Each training session is provided three times a year. While the exact dates are not pre-scheduled, the trainings are typically held in late winter, late spring, and early fall.

Volunteers must complete two background checks prior to beginning service, one through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the other through the Child Protection Registry. All information will remain confidential.
