How to Help
SUPPORTING SOMEONE EXPERIENCING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OR INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE
-
If a survivor feels safe talking to you, it is important that you remain non-judgmental and empathetic while also naming concerning red flags and behaviors. Do not tell the survivor what to do—instead, provide them options and make resources available to them so when they are ready to leave, they know where they can go.
-
Having just one safe person can help a survivor with isolation. Listen, be patient, address the survivor as an equal, and treat them as the expert on their own life. Take care of yourself and be realistic about what you are able to do—a survivor has to decide they want to leave on their own.
-
Believe the survivor, prioritize their safety, share resources, respect their choices, and stay patient and supportive.
I felt very wrapped in support from all the resources I’ve received and all the positivity that is swirling around me.“
